N.J. pilot killed in helicopter crash was ‘humble, a great pilot,’ wife says

Funeral services will be held today for a Franklinville pilot killed in a helicopter crash last month.

Michael R. Murphy, 37, was flying a PennStar helicopter near New Castle County Airport in Delaware on May 25 when the aircraft crashed into a drainage ditch behind a post office, according to Delaware State Police.

The 2006 Airbus EC-135P2 burst into flames upon impact.

Murphy, who flew helicopters for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and also worked as a backup pilot for NBC10, was flying alone on a training exercise and had departed that morning from Atlantic City.

In an interview with NBC10, his wife, Erika, described her husband as “humble and a great pilot, person, father, son and brother.”

Erika Murphy is pregnant with the couple’s second child.

A viewing is being held this morning at Christ the Redeemer Parish/Assumption Church in Atco. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Murphy children’s college fund. Checks can be made out to Erika Murphy, c/o LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ 08004.

A GoFundMe campaign was also established to support the family.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
